And now knee surgery AGAIN. UGH!!!

So after an absolutely perfect weekend I had knee surgery on Monday. On my way in, right in the parking lot I saw this little woodpecker. I'm not sure if I ever mentioned that my husband and I are becoming amateur (I mean really novice) birdwatchers. So this was cool.

Snowshoeing to round off the weekend

To finish off the amazing weekend we went snowshoeing in Rocky Mountain National  Park. It was our first time and I think we'll do it again.

Everybody needs some R& R

Like I said earlier last week was my birthday. It was an amazing weekend. My husband and I live in gorgeous Colorado. One of our favorite places to visit and hang out is Estes Park. We go to Rocky Mountain National Park A LOT! One of the neatest place in Estes is the Stanley Hotel. It's on the National Historical Registry (I think that's the designation). It was also the place to inspire Stephen King's book The Shining...which by the way is far scarier than the movie. Well, to make this story shorter, we have  always wanted to go there but for one reason or another we never made it. We finally did it last weekend. Not only that, we did a Ghost Tour and went to a show called "Illusions of the Passed" with Aiden Sinclair (who was on America's Got Talent).  We spent to night in a haunted room and even watched  the movie The Shining in the hotel. We had drinks in the bar where Jim Carrey waited for his date to show up in Dumb and Dumber.  It was fantastic. Here are some pictures...

Some weekend birthday fun

Last Friday was my birthday.  I turned 29 again. Funny how that works huh?!?!? Anyway my husband and I hosted our staff Christmas party. It was a lot of fun. We played some games, ate lots of food, did a white elephant gift exchange and played some more games. It was a fun start to the weekend.

Whole Brain Teaching

Part of my new job includes working with new teachers.  We have two brand new teachers, plus two that are new to our building.  We are also fortunate to be getting a new teacher after Christmas Break.  She has started this week, but unfortunately I am not there because of my knee surgery.
However, one of the things we are going to start up after Christmas is WHOLE BRAIN TEACHING.  We also have a team of veteran teachers that are going to give it a shot as well.  The third grade team and the new teachers seem open to the idea.  You can visit the website http://www.wholebrainteaching.com/ yourself to check it out.  Plus there are tons of videos if you do a search on Youtube.  It looks like a super effective way to have active engagement and excellent classroom management.  I wll be blogging about it and maybe including our own videos once they get it up and going.  I can't wait to see how it works.

More Tickle Fun

Tickle has made so many friends this year.  I had to take some time off because I had to have knee surgery-UGH!!! My friend Jessica is helping Tickle out a little bit because we all know that Elves sometimes rely on good old-fashioned handy work instead of magic all the time.  I can't wait to see what kind of mischief Tickle gets into while I'm gone.

Tickle Supports Fuel Up To Play 60

Back in October we had Miles, the Denver Broncos Mascot visit our school for an assembly to promote the Fuel Up To Play 60 Program, which encourages kids to be more active.  It was a great time.  Here are some pictures from that day.  But Tickle had to get in on the action and support the Fuel Up to Play 60 Program too.  One day he was in the gym.

Family Holiday Night

This year our Family Holiday Night was a huge success.  We had cookie decorating, and writing letters to Santa. We did a "Cake Walk" only our was a "Candy Walk", and played Holiday Bingo.  We drew Elf Selfies (see an earlier post for these), and took pictures with Santa.  It was all FREE and the families had an amazing time!

Tickle's Take on Security

At Green Acres we take the security of our students very seriously.  We have in the past couple years had some construction to keep our school on permanent lockout.  Our student are safe and we feel good about the learning that is happening in our building.  One other aspect of security is that we have security cameras throughout the inside and outside of our school.  It gives us a sense of safety but it also works as a behavior deterrent (well kind of).  But Tickle had some fun with it.

Say Cheese!

Tickle add to the Green Acres Pledge

At our school we actively participate in Positive Behavior Support.  One of the aspects is that daily we say as a school the Green Acres Pledge right after we say the Pledge of Allegiance.  It goes like this:  "As Green Acres students we pledge to be safe, responsible and respectful to ourselves, our teachers and our friends."  Well Tickle visited our Eagle (our school mascot) above our school bulletin board.  He added some candy canes and his own little twist to the pledge.

Tickle goes Ziplining and Gets Touched...Oh NO!!!

One of the hardest things when you work with a variety of age levels is the differences in believing.  I would say for the most part the kids in our school which is 1st -4th grade (for now-next year we will have 5th too) have a high level of belief.  But, and this is a big but...this year it seems like our 4th graders are into practical jokes.  Only at this age level, the jokes aren't necessarily funny.  It kind of makes me sad.  Plus this age level is fairly selfish, and I'm not trying to be critical, I just think it's a developmental phase they go through.  Anyway, Tickle was ziplining in the hall and some 4th grade boys dared one of their friends to touch him.  What's not so nice about it is this boy somewhat believed, but they told him something bad would happen to him, not that Tickle would have to return to the North Pole. So one thing led to another, he touched Tickle, and the rest of the students were devastated.  I was more sad than mad.
Well, Tickle went back and had to spend the weekend with Santa and he returned Monday in time for our Family Holiday Night.

Tickle Adds Some Christmas Cheer to the Office

Tickle heard from another elf that our principal loves and collects Santas.  So he made this Santa bow that I saw on Pinterest.
Tickle and Buddy did a pretty good job.  I think the door turned out pretty cute.

The Most Fun Tickle Has Had

Tickle the Elf returned again this year.  But it was a lot more fun for him-instead of working in my classroom, he got to entertain and watch over the entire school.  And both students and teachers have loved him.  Everyone looks for him on a daily basis.  I haven't had the chance to blog daily about his adventures but I'll post all the pictures so far.
Tickle put up my Christmas Tree outside my classroom and decorated the hall with snowflakes and baubles.
