I think one of the biggest things I miss from being in the regular classroom, besides fun things like field trips, is teaching a variety of topics and subject areas. Not that I don't LOVE what I do now, but sometimes I get so caught up in the five components (you know...phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension and fluency) that I forget that we MUST MUST MUST make it interesting so kids will WANT to read. My second graders are the perfect group to prove this. A few weeks back, we did a series of stories about volcanoes. We did so much background building, experiments, youtube videos, read alouds, etc, that their weekly assessment scores went up. To me the proof was in the pudding (or lava if you will).
So now we are doing a series of stories on animals and the difference between herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. It was enough to spur me back into action. I know it's been a while since I have made a new activity, but here is something a little different. You can get this activity here at my Teachers Pay Teachers store or here at my Teachers Notebook shop. It is a sorting activity and a pop-up book. Enjoy!!!!
